Hawaii has always been a favorite destination for Americans looking for an exotic location but with the familiarities of still being in the United States. Whether it be lying on the beach, enjoying tropical foods, exploring rain forests, or climbing volcanoes, Hawaii has a plethora of awesome activities and beautiful sights to see that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. However, flights to Hawaii can often cost upwards of $500 for a roundtrip flight. I’ve recently had many readers come to me and ask how they can use points to fly to Hawaii and I will lay out the potential point options one can use to get there.

British Airways Avios:

British Airways has such a fantastic award program that is most valuable for its short-haul flights that cost only 4,500 points for a one way flight. Being that British Airways has a distance based award chart, flying to Hawaii from the West Coast can cost you as little as 12,500 points each way or 25,000 points roundtrip! If you search British Airways’ website, you can find flights from LAX to Honolulu, Maui, Kona, and Kauai on American Airlines for 12,500 Avios.

Flights to Hawaii from San Diego are also bookable through British Airways for 12,500 points, however, these flights are flown by Alaska Airlines and will not show up on British Airways’ website. Therefore, you have to search for the flight on Alaska Air’s website and find the saver award and then call up British Airways to book that flight over the phone. For example when I search for San Diego to Maui on Alaska Air, I’ll look for the saver award flight that shows up as 20k points and I will be able to book that flight through British Airways for less points:

If you do not have Chase Ultimate Rewards Points from either the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card or the Chase Ink Cards, then you may want to consider getting the Chase British Airways Card. Otherwise, American Express Starwood Preferred Guest transfers to British Airways and you will receive a 5,000 point bonus for every 20,000 points you transfer. So you can essentially fly roundtrip to Hawaii for only 20,000 Starpoints!
