I recently wrote an article about a great way to save points when booking award tickets on American Airlines with their off-peak award calendar for international flights. I also wanted to cover another way you can save miles when booking an award ticket for North America flights. For some reason, this option also seems to be fairly unknown to many people booking award flights with their AAdvantage points. The key here, is that you have to have a Citi AAdvantage credit card. Some of the Citi AAdvantage credit cards can save you up to 7,500 miles on a roundtrip flight, and others can save you 5,000 miles on a roundtrip award flight.

AA has a long list of destinations where these discounted award tickets can be booked. You can access the list here. The list includes a lot of major cities, such as: Newark, Nashville, New Orleans, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, Toronto, Vancouver, Washington DC, Houston, and many more. If you’re having trouble implementing the award codes at your booking and seeing the discount show up, just call American Airlines and asked them to do it over the phone and have them waive the fee. My brother just booked a flight to Nashville for 7,500 points less than a standard saver award ticket, AND he will get 10% of his points back thanks to the Citi Executive AAdvantage World Elite MasterCard. Many of you may still have this card thanks to the generous 100,000 point bonus offer that was offered for the last couple of months but recently went dead.
So keep this in mind when book your next award ticket with AAdvantage points, and comment below with your next destination!
The most awesome part about this is that it works both ways. So if you live IN one of the cities on the list (say, Atlanta), then you can book a reduced mileage award to ANYWHERE (domestically).
Thanks for the tip Dan!
